About this worksheet
Guide words are the two words printed at the top of each dictionary page: the first is the first entry on the page and the second is the last, and every other word falls between them in ABC order. Using guide words lets a reader find a word quickly without scanning the whole page. This worksheet teaches the skill with hands-on alphabetical practice.
Section A gives the guide words HARBOR and HEAVY and lists eight words; students decide whether each would appear on that page by checking if it comes between the guide words in alphabetical order. The set mixes words that fall before harbor, between the two, and after heavy. The reference box teaches the rule with a garden-gentle example not used as an item.
Section B is short-answer. Students define guide words, say what the first guide word shows, reason about a new guide-word pair (march-melt), and explain why guide words save time. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is a core part of efficient dictionary use.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and model checking a word against garden and gentle.
Complete Section A independently – have students compare each word to HARBOR and HEAVY letter by letter.
Discuss the tricky items (happy comes before harbor; hill and honey come after heavy).
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
