About this worksheet
Words range from general to specific. A general word names a broad group, like animal or food; a specific word names one exact member, like tiger or pizza. Often you can move from general to specific in steps – food, fruit, apple. Using specific words makes writing clearer and more vivid, and this worksheet teaches students to recognize and choose them.
Section A gives eight word pairs (animal/dog, rose/flower, vehicle/truck) and asks students to write the more specific word in each. The reference box teaches the idea with a food-fruit-apple ladder and a red-convertible example but uses none of the Section A pairs.
Section B asks students to supply their own more-specific word for six general words (animal, food, color, sport, toy, book). Page 3 is a complete answer key with samples. The skill strengthens word choice and precise writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and build a general-to-specific ladder together (food, fruit, apple).
Complete Section A independently – have students pick the word that names a smaller, more exact group.
Work Section B item 9 together: a more specific word for animal could be zebra.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any correctly more-specific word.
Pair with the Word Categories Worksheet or the Shades of Meaning Worksheet for a word-relationships mini-unit.
