Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
A diphthong is a vowel sound that glides from one sound to another within the same syllable, and your mouth moves as you say it. Two common spelling pairs make these gliding sounds: oi and oy, as in coin and boy, and ou and ow, as in cloud and cow. This worksheet helps young readers hear the glide and name the spelling.
Section A on page 1 gives eight words, and students write the diphthong, the two letters that make the gliding sound, in each one. The reference box explains the gliding idea and shows a short Examples block with different example words, so the assessed words stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 2 asks students to define a diphthong, describe what their mouth does, and write their own words using ow and oi. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on vowel sounds and supports decoding longer words.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and stretch out each gliding vowel sound.
Complete Section A independently – have students feel their mouth move on the sound.
Discuss how a diphthong differs from a single long or short vowel.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Long and Short Vowel Sounds Worksheet or the R-Controlled Vowels Worksheet.
