About this worksheet
Strong readers do not stop at every unfamiliar word; they keep reading and use the rest of the sentence to figure out what the word probably means. This worksheet gives students twelve focused chances to practice that move on words that often turn up in upper-elementary reading.
Section A is a set of eight single-sentence items with target words like famished, vacant, drowsy, luminous, abundant, tidy, frigid, and scarce. Each sentence carries clear clues. Section B steps up the difficulty with four two-sentence items that ask students to combine information from both sentences to define timid, anxious, immense, and delighted.
The reference box at the top of page 1 defines context clues and works through one example with the word METICULOUS, modeling the read-around-it move. Page 2 is a compact two-column answer key with sample meanings; any reasonable wording counts as correct.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and walk through the METICULOUS example, pointing to each context clue as you read.
Work the first two items of Section A together, modeling how to circle the helpful words before writing the meaning.
Have students complete the rest of Section A and all of Section B independently.
Use the answer key on page 2 for self-check or aide spot-check; accept any reasonable wording.
Pair with the Multiple Meaning Words Worksheet and the Root Words Worksheet for additional meaning-from-clues practice.
