Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A consonant blend is two or three consonants written together where you can hear each separate sound, like the bl in blue or the str in street. A blend is different from a digraph, where two letters make just one new sound, like sh or ch. This worksheet gives young readers practice hearing and writing beginning blends.

The reference box and Section A are on page 1. Section A has eight words, and students write the consonant blend at the start of each one. The reference box teaches the idea with different example blends, so the eight items stay independent of the model.

Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions, including writing a word that begins with a given blend. Page 3 is a complete answer key. This worksheet is distinct from the Consonant Digraphs Worksheet, where two letters make one sound.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and say each example blend slowly.

Complete Section A on page 1 independently, writing each beginning blend.

Say each word aloud to hear the two or three blended sounds.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Consonant Digraphs Worksheet or the Long and Short Vowel Sounds Worksheet.
