About this worksheet
A collocation is a pair or group of words that naturally go together because that is the usual way English speakers say it – we say ‘make a decision,’ not ‘do a decision.’ Both might follow the meaning, but only one sounds natural. This worksheet teaches students to choose the natural word and make their writing smoother.
Section A gives eight common collocations with a blank (take a ___ ; fast ___) and asks students to fill in the natural word. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘make a decision’ and ‘heavy rain’, which are not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to define a collocation, choose between ‘make your bed’ and ‘build your bed,’ explain why collocations help writing, and use ‘heavy traffic’ in a sentence. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill strengthens natural word choice.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and contrast a natural collocation with an odd synonym pairing.
Complete Section A independently – have students say each phrase aloud to hear what sounds right.
Work Section B item 10 together: decide which ‘bed’ collocation is natural.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Analogies Worksheet or the Shades of Meaning Worksheet for a word-relationships mini-unit.
