Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Cognates are words in two languages that come from the same root and have similar spelling and meaning, such as English ‘family’ and Spanish ‘familia.’ Because English and Spanish both borrowed many words from Latin, they share thousands of cognates. This worksheet helps students use cognates as a reading tool while watching out for false cognates.

Section A on page 1 gives eight English-Spanish pairs, and students write yes or no for whether each is a true cognate. The reference box teaches both kinds with a ‘family/familia’ true-cognate example and a ‘ropa/rope’ false-cognate example, so the assessed pairs stay independent of the model.

Section B on page 2 asks what cognates are, why English and Spanish share so many, what a false cognate is, and how cognates help reading. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on word origins and borrowed words.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and point out the shared Latin roots.

Complete Section A independently – have students check both spelling and meaning.

Discuss why false cognates can trick a reader.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Borrowed Words Worksheet or the Word Origins Worksheet.
