What this assessment checks
English builds new words by shortening and fusing old ones, and students meet the results daily without noticing:
- Expanding clipped words back to their full forms
- Finding the two words fused inside a blend
- Classifying a word as clipped, blended or a back-formation
How to use it
A good vocabulary-unit closer, and an unusually engaging one — most students are surprised that words they use constantly are made this way. Section C needs the three terms taught first.
Reading the results
Clipping removes part of one word (gymnasium to gym). Blending fuses parts of two (breakfast + lunch to brunch). A back-formation makes a shorter word by removing what looks like an ending, usually creating a verb from a noun (editor to edit). Sections A and B can be answered from word knowledge alone, so the gap between them and Section C is informative.
