Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A vague word is general and gives the reader only a fuzzy picture (good, big, nice, said, went); a precise word is specific and paints an exact picture (delicious, enormous, darted). This worksheet teaches students to choose precise words to make their writing clearer and more interesting.

Section A on page 1 gives eight word pairs and asks students to choose the more precise word in each (for example, tiptoed is more precise than walked; enormous is more precise than big). The reference box explains vague versus precise words with examples different from the eight Section A pairs.

Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define vague and precise words, replace vague words in two sentences, and explain why precise words help the reader. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill complements Shades of Meaning and Sensory Words.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and compare a vague sentence with a precise one.

Complete Section A independently, choosing the more precise word in each pair.

Discuss Section B items 11-12 (replacing vague words) and share revisions.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Shades of Meaning Worksheet or the Sensory Words Worksheet.
