About this worksheet
Assonance and consonance are sound devices poets use. Assonance is the repeat of the same vowel sound in nearby words (the long o in go slow), while consonance is the repeat of the same consonant sound (the k in black rock). Unlike alliteration, which repeats a sound only at the start of words, consonance can repeat it anywhere.
The reference box and Section A are on page 1. Section A has eight phrases, and students write whether each one uses assonance or consonance. The reference box teaches both devices with different examples, so the eight items stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions, including how consonance differs from alliteration. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. This worksheet completes the sound-device set alongside alliteration and onomatopoeia.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud, stretching the repeated sounds in each example.
Complete Section A on page 1 independently, labeling each phrase.
Read each phrase aloud to hear the repeated vowel or consonant.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Alliteration Worksheet or the Onomatopoeia Worksheet.
