Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Antonym practice is a classic vocabulary builder. Asking a student to flip a word to its opposite forces close attention to meaning and creates a natural moment to talk about shades of contrast.

Section A gives students ten common target words and asks them to write any reasonable antonym on the line. The open-response format makes it easy to invite multiple correct answers and to compare student choices. Section B narrows the task to a single correct answer drawn from three possibilities.

The reference box at the top of page 1 defines antonym in plain language with two example pairs. Page 2 is a compact two-column answer key. Sample antonyms are listed; any other reasonable opposite counts as correct in Section A.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and ask students for one antonym pair they can spot on the classroom walls.

Work Section A independently as a 5-minute warm-up, then share answers around the room to surface alternate antonyms.

Move to Section B as a focused single-answer activity; students circle their pick before writing it on the line.

Use the answer key on page 2 for self-check or aide spot-check; accept any reasonable Section A antonym.

Pair with the Synonyms Worksheet for matched same-meaning practice.
