Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
We shorten words to save time and space. An abbreviation is a short form of a single word, usually with a period (Mister becomes Mr., Street becomes St.), and you read it as the full word. An acronym is a new word built from the first letters of several words and said as one word (SCUBA, NASA). This worksheet teaches both and the difference between them.
Section A gives eight items – some words to abbreviate (Doctor, Tuesday, December) and some abbreviations to expand (Ave., Mrs., Jr.) – so students practice going both directions. The reference box teaches both forms with Mister and SCUBA examples not reused as items.
Section B asks students to label six examples abbreviation or acronym, with a hint in parentheses, balanced three and three. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill helps students read everyday print, signs, and labels.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and contrast Mr. (shortens one word) with NASA (first letters of many).
Complete Section A independently – have students notice the period on abbreviations.
Work Section B item 9 together: Dr. is an abbreviation; NASA is an acronym.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Contractions Worksheet or the Compound Words Worksheet for a word-formation mini-unit.
