Telling time on an analog clock trips up students because a clock asks them to read two hands, two number systems, and a circle that counts by fives — all at once. Break it into a clear sequence and the clock becomes readable: start with the hour, add half past, then teach counting by fives around the face. This guide covers how to teach telling time in grades 1–3 and pairs with the printable telling time worksheets for practice.

An analog clock has two hands that move at different speeds, and the same numbers 1–12 mean one thing for the hour hand and another for the minute hand. Naming that difference first prevents most of the confusion.

The Two Hands

The single most important idea comes before any number reading:

  • The short hand is the hour hand — it points at the hour.
  • The long hand is the minute hand — it points at the minutes.

“Short and slow, long and fast” is a phrase worth repeating until students never mix them up.

Start With the Hour, Then Half Past

Build up in stages so each step has only one new idea:

  1. O’clock — the minute hand on 12, the hour hand on a number: 3:00.
  2. Half past — the minute hand on 6 means thirty minutes: 3:30.

Half past is a natural second step because 6 is directly opposite 12 — the clock is split into two visible halves.

Counting by Fives Around the Clock

This is the key that unlocks every other time. Each number on the clock is five minutes apart: the 1 means 5 minutes, the 2 means 10, the 3 means 15, and so on around to the 12. Students who can skip-count by fives can read any minute the long hand points to. Practicing 5, 10, 15, 20… around the face is the highest-leverage drill in the whole unit.

Quarter Past and Quarter To

“Quarter” language connects the clock to fractions: a quarter of the clock is 15 minutes. Quarter past is 15 minutes after the hour (long hand on 3); quarter to is 15 minutes before the next hour (long hand on 9). This is often the last piece before students can read any clock.

A Teaching Sequence That Works

  1. The two hands — short is hour, long is minute.
  2. O’clock and half past — the two easy halves.
  3. Counting by fives around the face.
  4. Quarter past and quarter to.
  5. A.M. and P.M. — morning versus afternoon and night.

Where Students Get Stuck (and How to Help)

1. Confusing the two hands

Reading the hour off the long hand. Fix: “short and slow” — the short hand always gives the hour.

2. Reading the minute hand as a plain number

Seeing the long hand on 3 and saying “three minutes.” Fix: count by fives — the 3 means fifteen.

3. The hour hand between two numbers

At 3:45 the hour hand is nearly on the 4. Fix: the hour is the number the short hand has passed, not the one it is closest to.
