Teaching Skip Counting
Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s is the bridge to multiplication, place value, time, and money. Teach the pattern, for grades 1–3.

Skip counting is counting by a number other than one — 2, 4, 6, 8 or 5, 10, 15, 20 — and it is one of the most important bridges in early math. It is how students first meet the patterns that become the multiplication facts, and it makes counting money, telling time, and reading a number line far easier. This guide covers how to teach skip counting in grades 1–3 and pairs with the printable skip counting worksheets for practice.
Skip counting means counting forward by the same amount each time instead of by ones. Counting by 5s gives 5, 10, 15, 20; counting by 2s gives 2, 4, 6, 8. Each jump adds the same number, so a pattern appears.
Start With 2s, 5s, and 10s
The easiest and most useful counts to teach first are 10s, 5s, and 2s, in roughly that order. Counting by 10s (10, 20, 30) is nearly automatic and reinforces place value. Counting by 5s (5, 10, 15) connects to clocks and nickels. Counting by 2s (2, 4, 6) introduces even numbers. These three counts cover an enormous amount of everyday math before students ever tackle 3s, 4s, or beyond.
Counting in Hops
The clearest picture of skip counting is a number line with hops. To count by 5s, start at 0 and draw an arc that jumps five spaces to 5, then another to 10, then 15, then 20. Each hop is the same size, and the numbers you land on are the skip-counting sequence. The number line shows what skip counting really is — equal jumps — and it links directly to the idea that 4 hops of 5 is the same as 4 × 5.
Skip Counting Is Early Multiplication
Skip counting is the on-ramp to multiplication, and teaching the connection explicitly pays off later. When a student counts 5, 10, 15, 20, they have just found that four 5s make 20 — which is exactly 4 × 5. Every time you skip count, you are building a row of the times tables without calling it that. Point this out: the numbers you say when you count by 3s are the threes facts.
Find the Pattern
The real power of skip counting is the pattern, so draw students’ attention to it. Counting by 10s, every number ends in 0. By 5s, every number ends in 0 or 5. By 2s, you get the even numbers. These patterns are place-value patterns, and noticing them builds number sense that connects straight to place value. A student who sees the pattern can keep going without counting each jump by hand.
A Teaching Sequence That Works
- Count by 10s — the easiest jump, straight to 100.
- Count by 5s — clocks, nickels, tally marks.
- Count by 2s — the even numbers.
- Show it on a number line — equal hops.
- Name the pattern — and connect it to multiplication.
Where Students Get Stuck (and How to Help)
1. Losing the count partway
Forgetting the next number in the sequence. Fix: use a number line, a hundreds chart, or physical objects grouped by the count, so the pattern is visible, not just memorized.
2. Adding the wrong amount
Jumping by 5 once, then by 4. Fix: equal jumps on a number line make an uneven hop obvious — every arc should be the same width.
3. Not connecting it to multiplication
Treating skip counting as a separate chant. Fix: name it — “three 5s is 15, and that is 3 times 5” — so the bridge to multiplication is explicit.
