Built for a teacher with five sections

This is one class period, not a day. The plan is written to be run again for every section you teach, so the substitute reads it once and repeats it — and the packet says plainly what to cut if a period runs short, and what has to come back whatever happens.

Page 1 is the plan. Page 2 is a section log: one ruled line per period, for how far each class got and anything the returning teacher should know. No other packet on this site has one, because no other packet is taught more than once in a day.

Pages 3 to 9 are one student’s copy. You need one set per student, per section — the plan has a line for working that out before the folder goes in the drawer.

What is in the period

  • Do Now — eight minutes, page three
  • Reading: “The River That Kept the Calendar,” then the questions — fourteen minutes, pages four and five
  • Practice — twenty minutes, pages six and seven
  • Exit Ticket — eight minutes, page eight
  • If You Finish Early — spare time, page nine

The passage is informational — science or social studies — so nothing depends on a novel the class may be part-way through. The questions move from locating evidence to explaining it, and the written answers ask for a sentence.

How to use it

Print it, make the copies, and put it in the substitute folder. Nothing else needs preparing or looking up, and nothing depends on what the class was working on — so the same folder works on a day nobody saw coming. Pull the last two pages off the back before anything is handed out.

Teacher notes. Day 4 of 5. Pages 3 to 9 are one student’s copy, so you need one set per student per section. The first two pages and the last two are yours. The exit ticket is the only page that has to come back.
