About this worksheet
Throughout history people have moved from place to place – this is called migration. People move for push reasons (problems that drive them away, like no jobs, war, or disaster) and pull reasons (good things that draw them toward a new place, like better jobs, family, or freedom). This worksheet teaches the push-pull idea that explains so much of how communities and countries grow.
Section A gives eight reasons for moving (no jobs in the old town; good schools in the new city; a flood destroyed homes; family already lives there) and asks students to label each push or pull, balanced four and four. The reference box teaches both kinds with general examples but uses different wording than the items.
Section B is short-answer. Students define migration, contrast push and pull, give an example of each, explain why a move can have both, and describe how migration changes a community. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill underpins lessons on immigration and population.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and sort a couple of reasons into push and pull together.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘is this a problem pushing away or a good thing pulling toward?’
Discuss Section B item 13 (why a move can have both reasons) as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Native Peoples of North America Worksheet or the Communities Worksheet for a history mini-unit.
