About this worksheet
Voting is the most concrete civic action most students will ever take. Teaching the basics early – the minimum age, the secret ballot, the one-person-one-vote rule, the role of registration – lets upper-elementary students walk into any future election conversation with a working vocabulary instead of a blank.
Section A gives students 8 short statements about US elections and asks them to mark each TRUE or FALSE. The statements probe common misconceptions: the federal voting age (18, not 16), whether secret ballots are private, whether wealth affects vote weight (no – one person, one vote), whether registration is usually required, whether elections decide non-people questions, whether only the President is elected, how ties are typically resolved, and whether non-voters are still affected by election outcomes. The mix is balanced 4 TRUE / 4 FALSE.
Section B raises the difficulty: students answer 6 short questions about US elections – the federal minimum voting age and the amendment that set it (the 26th Amendment, 1971), one reason ballots are kept secret, an elected office besides President, what ‘one person, one vote’ means, why states ask voters to register before Election Day, and why a community might hold an election to decide a question like building a new park. The reference box at the top of page 1 uses a fictional classroom pet election to model how a vote actually works (ballots, secret choice, count, majority wins); the answer key is the final page. Content is non-partisan; no real candidates, parties, or election cycles are named.

How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and run through the classroom pet election as a mini-roleplay. Ask three volunteers to mark a ballot in private while the rest of the class watches, then count out loud.
Have students complete Section A independently. Remind them that two of the FALSE statements are common misconceptions (vote age 16, wealth-weighted votes) – they are good to recognize.
Work item 9 of Section B together as guided practice; let students answer items 10 through 14 independently or with a partner.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check; Section B answers are sample responses, not the only correct ones.
