Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
National symbols unite citizens around shared history and values. This worksheet introduces five key U.S. symbols — the American flag, Statue of Liberty, bald eagle, Liberty Bell, and White House — and expands students’ knowledge to include the national anthem, Great Seal, and Pledge of Allegiance.
Section A presents 10 short descriptions and asks students to write the name of the matching symbol. Clues range from physical features (white head, brown body) to location (New York Harbor) to function (home and office of the U.S. President), building both recall and reasoning.
Section B asks 6 thoughtful questions about why Americans value these symbols, what the flag’s design elements represent, and the difference between national and state symbols. Students also consider whether the Liberty Bell’s famous crack diminishes its value as a symbol. Page 3 is the answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and show images of each symbol if available.
Complete Section A independently — remind students they may see a symbol named more than once.
Discuss Section B questions as a class to surface reasoning before students write.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Rules and Responsibilities Worksheet to connect symbols to civic life.
