About this worksheet
Trade means giving something to get something back. Long before money was common, people used barter – swapping goods or services directly. A money trade uses coins, bills, or a card instead. This worksheet helps students see the difference and understand why money made trading so much easier.
Section A asks students to label eight exchanges – eggs for honey, three dollars for a notebook, a fence painted for piano lessons – as barter or a money trade, balanced evenly. The reference box teaches both kinds with a chickens-for-corn example and explains the matching problem barter creates.
Section B is short-answer. Students define the difference, give a barter example, explain why barter can be hard, and name a reason money was invented. Page 3 is the answer key. The lesson links to broader economics ideas about money and exchange.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and pause on why barter only works when each person wants what the other has.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘did money change hands?’ for each exchange.
Discuss Section B item 11 (why barter is hard) as a quick class talk.
