About this worksheet
Because Earth turns, the Sun rises at different times in different places, so the world is divided into time zones, each usually one hour apart. Traveling east makes the time later, and traveling west makes it earlier. The mainland United States has four zones – Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific. This worksheet teaches students to read and calculate across them.
Section A sets the rule that each zone west is one hour earlier and gives eight problems (it is 6:00 PM Eastern – what time in Central?). Students subtract one hour per zone. The reference box teaches the idea with a 3:00 PM Eastern to 2:00 PM Central example, using times not reused in the items.
Section B asks students why the world has time zones, to name the four U.S. zones east to west, whether traveling west makes time earlier or later, and to convert Eastern to Pacific. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is a core part of geography.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and point out the four U.S. zones on a map, east to west.
Complete Section A independently – have students subtract one hour for each zone going west.
Work Section B item 12 together: convert an Eastern time to Pacific as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
