About this worksheet

The Transcontinental Railroad was the first railroad to connect the eastern and western United States, completed in 1869. This worksheet teaches the key terms – Central Pacific, Union Pacific, Promontory Summit, and the golden spike.

The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box explains how the railroad was built. Section A has eight clues to match to the correct term. Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions.
