Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Before the United States became a country, it was thirteen British colonies grouped into three regions. New England had cold winters and rocky soil, the Middle Colonies had rich farmland, and the Southern Colonies had warm weather and long growing seasons. This worksheet helps students sort the colonies and their ways of life by region.

Section A on page 1 gives eight clues – which colonies belonged to each region, fishing and shipbuilding, the wheat-growing breadbasket, Southern plantations, and the Pilgrims – and asks students to write New England, Middle, or Southern. The reference box teaches the regions by climate, so the clues are not reused.

Section B on page 2 asks how many colonies there were and who ruled them, names the three regions, and compares the regions’ farms. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward early American history.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and find the three regions on a map of the colonies.

Complete Section A independently – have students think about each region’s climate and work.

Discuss how geography shaped how colonists earned a living.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Declaration of Independence Worksheet or the Timelines Worksheet.
