Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

The Industrial Revolution began in Britain in the 1700s and changed the world. Goods that had been made slowly by hand began to be made by machines in factories, while inventions like the steam engine powered work and travel. This worksheet helps students learn the key terms and changes of the period.

Section A on page 1 gives eight clues, and students write the term each one describes, such as factory, steam engine, urbanization, and assembly line. The reference box explains the change from handmade to machine-made goods so students have the information they need to match.

Section B on page 2 asks what changed about making goods, how the steam engine helped, why people moved to cities, and how the assembly line changed production. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on world history and economics.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and compare handmade with machine-made goods.

Complete Section A independently – have students match each clue to one term.

Discuss how new machines changed daily life and work.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Transportation History Worksheet or the Inventors and Inventions Worksheet.
