About this worksheet

The Enlightenment was a time when thinkers used reason instead of tradition, and their ideas helped shape modern government. This worksheet teaches key Enlightenment terms – reason, philosophers, natural rights, John Locke, the social contract, Montesquieu, and separation of powers.

The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box explains the movement and defines the key ideas and thinkers. Section A has eight clues to match to the correct term. Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions about reason, natural rights, the social contract, and the movement’s influence.
