About this worksheet
The Declaration of Independence announced that the thirteen American colonies were breaking away from Great Britain to become a free nation. The Continental Congress adopted it on July 4, 1776 – the reason we celebrate Independence Day – and Thomas Jefferson was its main author. This worksheet helps students learn the document’s key facts and ideas, a cornerstone of American history.
Section A gives eight fill-in-the-blank facts about the Declaration (the country it broke from, its author, the year it was adopted, the rights it names). The reference box teaches these facts first, and it explains that although the Declaration was adopted on July 4, most delegates added their signatures weeks later that summer.
Section B asks students to explain what the Declaration announced, why the Fourth of July matters, what ‘all men are created equal’ means, and whether most signatures were added on July 4. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward understanding the founding of the United States.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and note that July 4 is the date of adoption, not the main signing.
Complete Section A independently – have students fill in each fact.
Work Section B item 12 together: discuss why July 4 is the adoption date, not the signing date.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
