About this worksheet
The Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 between the Union, made up of Northern states, and the Confederacy, made up of Southern states that seceded. The central issue dividing the country was slavery. This worksheet helps students learn the sides, leaders, and outcome of the war.
Section A on page 1 gives eight clues, and students write the term each one describes, such as the Union, the Confederacy, Abraham Lincoln, and the Emancipation Proclamation. The reference box presents these facts so students have the information they need to match.
Section B on page 2 asks which two sides fought, the main issue, what the Emancipation Proclamation declared, and one result of the Union winning. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on early American history.
