About this worksheet
The civil rights movement was the struggle in the 1950s and 1960s for equal rights for Black Americans. For many years, laws and customs called segregation kept Black and white people apart and treated them unfairly. People worked peacefully to change these unjust laws, and in 1964 the Civil Rights Act made segregation and discrimination illegal.
Section A on page 1 gives eight clues, and students write the term each one describes. The reference box explains segregation, the Montgomery bus boycott, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., nonviolence, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Section B on page 2 asks what segregation was, why Rosa Parks is remembered, how Martin Luther King Jr. worked for change, and what the Civil Rights Act did. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The worksheet pairs well with the Rights and Freedoms and The Underground Railroad worksheets.
