Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

The American Revolution is where the United States began. Angry about being taxed by Great Britain without any say in its government, the thirteen colonies declared independence in 1776 and fought a long war to win it. This worksheet helps students connect the famous names and moments – the Boston Tea Party, George Washington, the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Paris – into one clear story.

Section A gives students 8 clues and a word bank, and asks them to write the matching person, event, or term. Section B moves to four short-response questions: define the Revolution, explain ‘no taxation without representation,’ describe Washington’s role, and explain how the Treaty of Paris changed the colonies.

The reference box on page 1 tells the story of the Revolution from its causes to its outcome and supplies the word bank. Section A is on page 1, Section B short responses are on page 2, and page 3 is a complete answer key with the term for each clue and sample answers for Section B.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and place the key dates (1773, 1776, 1783) on a quick timeline with students.

Work Section A independently, using the word bank to match each clue.

Move to Section B and discuss why ‘no taxation without representation’ felt unfair to colonists.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.

Pair with the Declaration of Independence Worksheet or The Thirteen Colonies Worksheet for more early-American history.
