About this worksheet
Supply and demand is the everyday economics idea behind almost every price change a student has seen. Connecting the words to concrete scenes – lemonade stands, ice cream trucks, concert tickets, gasoline – lets upper-elementary students notice the pattern without any heavy vocabulary or graphing.
Section A gives students 8 short market scenarios and asks them to label each as either the SUPPLY side (how much is available) or the DEMAND side (how much people want). Scenarios include a lemonade stand’s ready cups, kids asking for a new video game, a farmer’s pumpkin harvest, a factory’s sneaker shipment, a hot-day ice cream line, family beach toy buying, a theater’s popped popcorn, and a backyard tomato crop. The mix is balanced 5 supply / 3 demand.
Section B raises the difficulty: students answer 6 short scenario questions about how supply and demand move prices, including a concert with high ticket demand, out-of-season strawberries, snow shovels after a storm, a popular flashlight with plenty in stock, the back-to-school surge, and gasoline during a holiday weekend. The reference box at the top of page 1 introduces both ideas using a fictional umbrella shop in a rainy week; no Section A or Section B item reuses the umbrella context. The answer key is the final page.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and walk through the umbrella shop example, naming the moment SUPPLY drops and DEMAND rises so students hear how the two words pair up.
Have students complete Section A independently. Suggest they ask ‘is this about how much is available, or how much people want?’ for each item before writing an answer.
Work item 9 of Section B together as guided practice; let students finish items 10 through 14 independently or with a partner.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check; Section B answers are sample responses, not the only correct ones.
Pair with the Goods and Services Worksheet or the Needs and Wants Worksheet to build a short economics mini-unit.
