Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Specialization means a person, business, or place focuses on one product or one kind of work instead of trying to do everything, which makes them faster and better at that job. Because each worker specializes, no one makes everything they need, so people rely on one another – that reliance is interdependence. This worksheet helps students see specialization as the choice to focus and interdependence as its result.
Section A on page 1 lists eight examples (a dentist, buying bread, a factory wheel installer, a town that relies on out-of-state oranges, a chef, a school with different staff, a country trading for oil, a bakery) and asks students to label each specialization or interdependence. The reference box defines both terms with generic examples but names none of the eight items.
Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define specialization, explain how it raises output, define interdependence, and give an example of two workers who depend on each other. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill connects to goods and services, producers and consumers, and trade.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask students to name one job each person in their family specializes in.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘is this focusing on one job, or relying on someone else?’
Discuss Section B item 11 (why specialization causes interdependence) as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Goods and Services Worksheet or the Producers and Consumers Worksheet for an economics mini-unit.
