Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

People make money choices every day. Spending means using money now to buy something; saving means keeping some money to use later, often for a bigger goal. A budget is a simple plan for how much to save and how much to spend. This worksheet gives young students a concrete, friendly start on personal money sense.

Section A lists eight choices (buying candy today, putting birthday money in a piggy bank, keeping allowance for a bike) and asks students to label each saving or spending, balanced four and four. The reference box defines spending, saving, and budget with a five-dollar example but names none of the eight Section A choices.

Section B is short-answer. Students contrast saving and spending, define a budget, reason about a $10-toward-a-$25-game choice, and name something they would save for. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is the foundation of financial literacy.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and split a pretend five dollars into save and spend with the class.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘is this money used now or kept for later?’

Discuss Section B item 12 (Lena’s $10 toward a $25 game) to model saving toward a goal.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Needs and Wants Worksheet or the Scarcity and Choice Worksheet for an economics mini-unit.
