About this worksheet
Geographers often divide the United States into five regions – the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West. States in the same region usually share climate, landforms, or history, which makes them easier to study together. This worksheet helps students learn where each region is and which states belong to it, a foundational geography skill.
Section A names ten states with a short clue (Florida with its warm beaches; California on the Pacific coast) and asks students to write the region for each. The reference box describes where each region sits on the map and gives one anchor state per region that is not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to list the five regions, explain why states are grouped, identify the desert region, and compare the climate of the Northeast and the Southwest. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward map reading and understanding United States geography.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and point out where each region sits on a U.S. map.
Complete Section A independently – have students write the region for each state.
Work Section B item 16 together: compare the Northeast and Southwest climates.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the US States and Capitals Worksheet or the Climate Regions Worksheet for a geography mini-unit.
