About this worksheet
Historical thinking starts with sources. A primary source is a firsthand record made by someone who was there – a diary, a photograph taken that day, an actual object. A secondary source is made later by someone who studied the event but did not witness it – a biography, a textbook chapter, an encyclopedia article. This worksheet helps upper-elementary students draw that line.
Section A asks students to label eight source examples as primary or secondary, mixing the two evenly so students apply the test rather than guess. The reference box teaches the categories with a generic letter-versus-textbook example, so the worksheet builds the skill without handing over the answers.
Section B is short-answer. Students define what makes a source primary, supply their own example, judge a textbook page, and name the one question that settles most cases. Page 3 is the answer key. The skill transfers directly to research, reading, and document-based history work.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and pause on the test question: ‘Was the maker present at the event?’
Complete Section A independently – have students whisper-read each source before labeling it.
