About this worksheet
A political party is a group of people who share similar ideas about how the government should work and who join together to support candidates – the people who run for office – in an election. This worksheet teaches the concept of parties and elections with neutral, nonpartisan language and uses no real party names, so it focuses on how the process works rather than on any one side.
Section A on page 1 has eight true/false statements about parties, candidates, campaigns, ballots, and elections (for example, that voters mark a private ballot and that the candidate with the most votes wins). The reference box defines party, candidate, campaign, election, and ballot in general terms so students can judge each statement on its own.
Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define a political party, explain why like-minded people form one, describe candidates and campaigns, and explain why more than one party helps voters. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds on the Voting Worksheet and the Branches of Government Worksheet.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and clarify that the worksheet names no real parties on purpose.
Complete Section A independently, deciding true or false for each statement.
Discuss Section B item 14 (why more than one party is useful) as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Voting Worksheet or the Branches of Government Worksheet for a civics mini-unit.
