About this worksheet
Telling NEEDS apart from WANTS is the first economics skill most children learn. Needs are the items a person must have to live and stay healthy – food, water, shelter, and clothing. Wants make life more fun or comfortable but are not required. Families have to spend money carefully, so needs come first; wants come after. Learning the distinction early gives students a lens they will reuse every time they hear about money, budgets, or making choices.
Section A gives students 10 items to sort as need or want, balanced 5 of each: fresh drinking water (need), the newest video game (want), a winter coat in cold weather (need), a trip to an amusement park (want), a safe place to sleep (need), brand-new sneakers (want), healthy meals each day (need), a candy bar after lunch (want), soap and a way to stay clean (need), and a tablet for playing games (want).
Section B raises the difficulty: students answer 6 short questions in their own words – why families take care of needs before wants, naming a need they used today, naming a want they enjoyed this week, explaining how a need differs from a want, why one item can be a need for one person and a want for another (a coat is a need in cold weather but a want in warm weather), and one good way for a family with extra money to spend it after needs are paid. The reference box at the top of page 1 introduces the two ideas; page 3 is the answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and underline the four basic needs (food, water, shelter, clothing).
Work Section A independently or as a brief partner sort. Encourage students to defend choices that depend on context (a coat).
Before Section B, model item 11 aloud: ‘Why do families take care of needs before wants?’ Show how to start the answer with ‘because’ to get a complete-sentence response.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check; Section B answers are samples – any reasonable answer counts.
