About this worksheet
Long before Europeans arrived, NATIVE PEOPLES lived all across North America. Each region had its own climate, plants, and animals – and those local resources shaped how people built homes, found food, and lived day to day. Historians group these many nations into five main cultural regions for teaching: Eastern Woodlands, Plains, Southwest, Pacific Northwest, and Arctic. Within each region were many different nations, each with its own language, beliefs, and traditions.
Section A gives students 8 lifeway descriptions and asks which cultural region best matches each. The descriptions emphasize how climate and local resources shaped daily life: longhouses and Three Sisters farming in the forested east (Eastern Woodlands), buffalo hunting on horseback in the grasslands (Plains), adobe homes and irrigated corn in the desert (Southwest), totem poles and salmon along the coast (Pacific Northwest), and snow-block shelters and seal hunting in the far north (Arctic).
Section B raises the difficulty: students answer 6 short questions in their own words – why different regions built different homes, an important Plains food source, how Arctic climate shaped daily life, why Pacific Northwest peoples depended on the ocean, what the Three Sisters crops gave to the people who grew them, and why it matters to remember that each Native nation had its own language and traditions rather than treating them all as one. The reference box at the top of page 1 introduces the five regions; page 3 is the answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and locate each cultural region on a class map of North America before students start Section A.
Work Section A independently or with a partner. Encourage students to underline the climate or resource clue in each description (forest, grassland, desert, coast, snow) before choosing the region.
Before Section B, remind students that ‘sample answer’ in the AK means a thoughtful answer in their own words is welcome.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
Pair with the Continents and Oceans Worksheet, the US States and Capitals Worksheet, or the Map Skills Worksheet to build a short geography-and-culture mini-unit.
