About this worksheet

A landmark is a famous place people recognize and visit, and a monument is a landmark built to honor a person or event. The United States has many landmarks – some built by people, like the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument, and some made by nature, like the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. This worksheet introduces eight well-known landmarks and what makes each special.

Section A lists eight landmarks (the Statue of Liberty, the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, the White House, the Liberty Bell, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Washington Monument, Yellowstone) and asks students to match each to its description from a lettered box (A-H) on the next page. The descriptions give the place, location, and meaning of each landmark.

Section B is short-answer. Students define a landmark, contrast human-made and natural landmarks, name a landmark that honors a person or event, and explain why landmarks draw visitors. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds American geography and cultural knowledge.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and show pictures of a few landmarks if available.

Have students read the eight landmarks, then the A-H descriptions, before matching.

Work Section A item 1 together: the Statue of Liberty is the giant statue in New York harbor (A).

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the U.S. Symbols Worksheet or the Famous Americans Worksheet for a culture mini-unit.
