About this worksheet
Massachusetts is where a great deal of American history actually happened, and this worksheet walks it in order: the Algonquian peoples who were farming there when Europeans arrived, Bartholomew Gosnold naming Cape Cod in 1602, the Pilgrims in 1620, the Massachusetts Bay Colony, King Philip’s War, the Salem witch trials, and then the decade of protest that ended in revolution.
Three familiar stories get told correctly here. The Boston Tea Party involved three ships and 342 chests of tea on December 16, 1773. The first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired at Lexington, and the fighting moved on to Concord afterward. And Paul Revere never reached Concord — a British patrol caught him, and of the three riders only Samuel Prescott completed the journey.
The lesson also fixes the most repeated mistake in American history teaching: the Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4, 1776, but most delegates did not sign it until August 2.
Section A asks students to circle the best answer to four multiple choice questions. Section B asks students to write TRUE or FALSE for six statements about the passage. Section C asks students to fill in six missing words. A complete answer key is included on page 3.
