Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Reading a map is a foundational geography skill. This worksheet teaches the five parts every good map should have — title, legend, compass rose, scale, and grid — and gives students practice identifying and using each one.
Section A presents 10 map features and asks students to write what each one is used for. Items include the compass rose, scale bar, legend, north arrow, grid coordinates, and common map symbols such as a star for a capital city.
Section B moves students into application with 6 questions that require them to use map skills to answer real scenarios: using a scale to calculate distance, interpreting a legend symbol, reading a grid coordinate, and comparing a map to a photograph. Page 3 is the answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask students to point out each map part on a classroom map or globe.
Complete Section A independently — encourage students to refer back to the reference box.
For Section B item 3 (scale calculation), walk through the math as a class before students answer.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Communities Worksheet to connect map reading to community geography.
