About this worksheet
A map is much smaller than the real place it shows, so mapmakers use a scale to tell how map distance stands for real distance. A scale such as 1 inch = 10 miles means every map inch equals ten real miles, found by multiplying map inches by the scale. This worksheet teaches students to read a scale and calculate real distances.
Section A sets a scale of 1 inch = 10 miles and gives eight map distances (2 inches, 4 inches) for students to convert to real miles by multiplying. The reference box teaches the skill using a different scale, 1 inch = 5 miles, with a three-inch worked example so the numbers do not overlap the items.
Section B asks students what a scale tells them, to convert a 3-inch distance, to work backward from 100 real miles to map inches, and to explain why mapmakers use a scale. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is a core part of reading and using maps.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and model multiplying map inches by the scale’s miles.
Complete Section A independently – have students multiply each inch value by ten.
Work Section B item 10 together: find the real miles for a 3-inch map distance.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Map Skills Worksheet or the Map Legend Worksheet for a geography mini-unit.
