About this worksheet
Every paper map, atlas page, trail board, and digital map relies on a legend – a small box that translates pictures and shapes into real features. Teaching elementary students to look at the legend FIRST builds a habit that pays off across geography, history, and any subject that uses a map.
Section A gives students 8 short word descriptions of common map symbols and asks them to write what feature each symbol represents. Examples include a small tent (campground), a wavy blue shape (water), an open book (library), and a tooth with a cross (hospital). The descriptions use plain words so students focus on what the symbol shows, not on tiny printed icons they might struggle to read at a glance.
Section B raises the difficulty: students answer 6 short questions about why symbols replace words, where the legend usually sits on a paper map, what to do when they meet an unfamiliar symbol, why two maps can use different symbols for the same feature, what they would expect on a state highway map, and how a legend helps a first-time visitor. The reference box at the top of page 1 uses a fictional zoo map to introduce the concept with three made-up symbols (gate, snack bar, bird house) so none of the assessed items is previewed; the answer key is the final page.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask the class to name two real maps they have used in the past month – a school map, a trail board, or a digital map all work.
Have students complete Section A independently. Encourage them to write the most common feature for each symbol; some symbols have several reasonable answers.
Move to Section B and model item 9 together; the rest of Section B is short-answer work that students can do independently or with a partner.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check; Section B answers are sample responses, not the only correct ones.
