Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

People in a community do many jobs to earn money. Jobs come in two main kinds: a goods job makes, grows, or builds a product (a baker makes bread, a farmer grows food), and a service job does something helpful for others (a teacher helps students, a doctor helps patients). This worksheet teaches students to tell the two apart.

Section A lists eight jobs (a farmer growing vegetables, a doctor treating patients, a carpenter building furniture) and asks students to label each goods or service, balanced four and four. The reference box teaches both kinds with baker, teacher, and doctor examples but names none of the eight Section A jobs.

Section B is short-answer. Students contrast goods and service jobs, name a worker of each kind, explain why a community needs both, name a job they would like, and explain why people work. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill connects to goods and services and community life.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and ask whether each example worker makes a thing or helps people.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘product or help?’ for each job.

Discuss Section B item 13 (a job the student would like) as a class share.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Goods and Services Worksheet or the Producers and Consumers Worksheet for an economics mini-unit.
