About this worksheet
An inventor is a person who creates something new and useful, or greatly improves an idea so many people can use it. Inventions change how people live, work, travel, and communicate. Inventions usually build on earlier work, so an inventor often makes the first practical version of an idea. This worksheet introduces four famous inventors and what they are known for.
Section A asks students to match four inventors – Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, the Wright Brothers, and Benjamin Franklin – to their inventions from a box (A-D). Items 1-4 name the inventors and items 5-8 describe the same four, so each invention is used twice. The descriptions use careful phrasing (Edison developed a practical light bulb and the phonograph).
Section B is short-answer. Students define an inventor, explain how inventions change life, reason about why inventors make the first practical version, and name a daily invention they use. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds American history and the idea of innovation.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and discuss how an invention can change everyday life.
Have students read the four inventors and the A-D inventions, then match items 1-8.
Work Section A item 1 together: Thomas Edison developed a practical light bulb and the phonograph (A).
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Famous Americans Worksheet or the Timelines Worksheet for a history mini-unit.
