Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Income is money that comes in to a person or family – from a job, a sale, or a gift – while an expense is money that goes out to buy something or pay a bill. This worksheet builds early personal-finance sense by having students sort everyday money events into the two groups.
Section A gives eight money events (Earning $10 for mowing a lawn; Buying a $5 movie ticket) and asks students to label each income or expense. The reference box teaches the idea with bank interest and bus fare, examples not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to define income and expense, explain why income should stay higher than expenses, and name a monthly family expense. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward budgeting, saving, and spending.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask ‘is money coming in, or going out?’ for each example.
Complete Section A independently – have students follow which way the money moves.
Work Section B item 11 together: discuss why a budget keeps income higher than expenses.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Saving and Spending Worksheet or the Needs and Wants Worksheet for an economics mini-unit.
