Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Human capital is the knowledge, skills, training, and good health a person has that make their work more valuable – things a worker builds over time by learning and practicing rather than is born with. Building human capital is an investment: it costs time, effort, or money now but pays off later with better work and often higher pay. This worksheet teaches students to see learning and training as economic investments.

Section A on page 1 lists eight actions (earning a nursing degree, buying chips, practicing piano, watching cartoons all weekend, taking a coding class, exercising to stay healthy, spending on a video game, training as an electrician) and asks students to label each builds human capital or does not. The reference box defines human capital with a generic example but names none of the eight items.

Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define human capital, name ways to build it, explain why it is an investment, and connect skilled workers to community benefit. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill links economics to careers and entrepreneurship.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and ask students to name one skill they are building right now.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘does this add lasting skill or knowledge?’

Discuss Section B item 11 (why building human capital is an investment) as a class.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Jobs and Careers Worksheet or the Entrepreneurs Worksheet for an economics mini-unit.
