About this worksheet
Around the world, people celebrate holidays that reflect their culture, history, and beliefs – festivals of light like Diwali and Hanukkah, joyful gatherings like Holi and Carnival, and meaningful traditions like the Day of the Dead and Kwanzaa. Learning about these celebrations helps students appreciate the world’s many cultures and notice what people everywhere share.
Section A gives students 8 clues and a word bank of holidays, and asks them to write the matching celebration. Section B moves to four short-response questions: explain why people celebrate holidays, name two holidays and what they celebrate, choose one to learn more about, and find something the holidays have in common.
The reference box on page 1 describes eight holidays from cultures around the world and supplies the word bank. Section A is on page 1, Section B short responses are on page 2, and page 3 is a complete answer key with the holiday for each clue and sample answers for Section B.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and invite students to share any of these holidays their family celebrates.
Work Section A independently, using the word bank to match each clue.
Move to Section B and discuss what many of these celebrations have in common.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
Pair with the Customs and Traditions Worksheet or American Holidays Worksheet for more culture study.
