Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Goods and services are the building blocks of an economy. This worksheet teaches students to distinguish between physical objects people make or grow (goods) and tasks one person performs for another (services), then connects those categories to producers, consumers, wants, and needs.
Section A presents 10 familiar items — shoes, plumbing repair, bicycles, dental checkups, apples, music lessons, backpacks, library borrowing, pencils, and dog grooming — and asks students to classify each as a good or a service.
Section B challenges students with 6 questions that require economic reasoning: identifying whether a worker is a producer or consumer, distinguishing a want from a need, explaining why people specialize and trade, and naming goods and services a school provides. Page 3 is the answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask students to give one example of a good and one service they used this week.
Complete Section A independently — remind students that a service is something you experience, not something you hold.
Discuss Section B item 3 (wants vs. needs) as a class before students write.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Communities Worksheet to connect economic activity to community types.
