About this worksheet
Culture is the shared way of life of a group – their food, language, music, holidays, clothing, and beliefs. Cultural diffusion is the spreading of parts of one culture to another when groups come into contact through trade, travel, moving, or the internet. This worksheet helps students recognize diffusion in everyday life and tell it apart from simply using something within one’s own culture.
Section A on page 1 lists eight scenarios (pizza spreading from Italy, a family’s usual dinner, the loanword safari, music played worldwide, a town keeping only its own holidays, travelers bringing a new spice, a shared dance, rereading a home-country book) and asks students to label each cultural diffusion or not. The reference box defines culture and diffusion with a generic example but names none of the eight items.
Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define cultural diffusion, name ways cultures share ideas, give a food example, and connect the internet to faster diffusion. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds on customs and traditions and on immigration.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and brainstorm foods the class enjoys that came from other cultures.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘is something spreading between groups, or staying within one?’
Discuss Section B item 12 (how the internet causes diffusion today) as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Customs and Traditions Worksheet or the Immigration Worksheet for a culture mini-unit.
