About this worksheet
A court is where the judicial branch of government settles disagreements and decides whether someone has broken a law, applying the law fairly and protecting people’s rights. Inside a court, a judge leads and decides a fair outcome, a jury of citizens decides whether someone is guilty, and a lawyer speaks for one side and presents its case. This worksheet teaches what courts do and who works in them.
Section A on page 1 gives eight clues describing courtroom duties and asks students to write judge, jury, lawyer, or court for each (for example, ‘a group of citizens who decide whether someone is guilty’ and ‘also called an attorney’). The reference box defines court, judge, jury, and lawyer in general so students match by role, not by copying a sentence.
Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students state a court’s job, describe what a judge and jury do, explain a lawyer’s role, and name which branch courts belong to. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill deepens the Branches of Government Worksheet and Checks and Balances.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and list the four roles (court, judge, jury, lawyer) on the board.
Complete Section A independently, matching each clue to one role.
Discuss Section B item 13 (why fair courts matter) as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Branches of Government Worksheet or the Checks and Balances Worksheet for a civics mini-unit.
