Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Every place on Earth sits on one of seven continents or in one of five oceans. This worksheet introduces all twelve names in a short reference box and then asks students to use them in two ways.

Section A is a classification task: students write ‘continent’ or ‘ocean’ for each of 10 names (Africa, Pacific, Atlantic, Asia, Antarctica, Indian, Europe, Arctic, South America, Southern). The mix builds confident recall of all 12 names.

Section B turns to reasoning. Students answer questions about which continent has the most people, which ocean is the largest, which ocean touches the North Pole, and how a ship can sail from one ocean to another. Page 3 is the complete answer key.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and point out each continent and ocean on a wall map if available.

Complete Section A independently — students simply mark each name as continent or ocean.

Discuss Section B as a class so students can hear different reasoning before writing their own answers.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Map Skills Worksheet or the Cardinal and Intermediate Directions Worksheet for a complete geography mini-unit.
